Proper care after dental implant treatment ensures your implant stays healthy for a lifetime. At Ankara Rosedent Dental Clinic, we provide comprehensive guidance on post-implant care to our patients.

In this guide, we will share everything you need to know from first-day care after implant treatment to long-term protection.

First 24 Hours After Implant Surgery

The first day after surgery is the most critical period of the healing process. What you need to pay attention to during this period:

Bleeding Control

Light bleeding is considered normal. For bleeding control:

  • Bite and hold the gauze given to you for 30-45 minutes
  • If bleeding continues, replace with a clean gauze
  • Pink saliva mixed with saliva is normal
  • In case of severe bleeding, contact us immediately

Swelling and Bruising

Swelling and bruising in the surgical area is normal:

  • Apply ice compress for the first 48 hours (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off)
  • Swelling usually peaks on day 3
  • Completely resolves within 7-10 days
  • Don't lie on the surgery side of your face

Medication Use

Use prescribed medications regularly:

  • Antibiotics: Don't stop before completing the course
  • Painkillers: Take before pain starts
  • Mouthwash: Don't use before the specified time

First Week Nutrition Recommendations

Post-operative nutrition directly affects the healing process:

First 24 Hours

  • Consume only liquid and soft foods
  • Avoid very hot or very cold drinks
  • Don't use a straw (sucking motion can increase bleeding)

Days 2-7

  • Prefer soft foods that don't require chewing
  • Pureed vegetables, yogurt, pudding are suitable options
  • Chew on the opposite side of the surgery area
  • Avoid spices and acidic foods

Week 2 and Beyond

  • You can transition to soft solid foods
  • Avoid hard-shelled foods (nuts, chips)
  • Return to normal diet when your doctor approves

First Week Oral Care

Proper oral care reduces infection risk:

Brushing

  • Don't brush the surgery area for 24 hours
  • Gently brush other teeth with a soft brush
  • From day 2, you can very gently touch the surgery area

Rinsing

  • Don't rinse for the first 24 hours
  • From day 2, use salt water or prescribed mouthwash
  • Rinse gently, don't gargle vigorously

Things to Avoid

Behaviors that can negatively affect the healing process:

  • Smoking: Don't smoke for at least 2 weeks, ideally 4 weeks
  • Alcohol: Don't consume during medication use and the first week
  • Intense exercise: Don't do heavy sports for the first 3-5 days
  • Touching surgery area: Don't touch with tongue or fingers
  • Hot applications: Don't apply hot compress for the first 48 hours
